Well, like one of my teachers explained to me (an acupuncturist himself) "acu" means needle, so to say 'acupressure' is really a misnomer. But, yes, in a way, shiatsu can be likened to acupressure in that one uses finger or thumb pressure, instead of needles, to tonify or pacify traditional acupunture points in order to bring about symptomatic relief.  I am not as educated in acupressure per se, but from my understanding, acupressure focuses primarily on the use of pressure in specifc points for the treatment of specific ailments. And while there are a number of expressions and schools of shiatsu, my own practice brings in other dimensions and approaches for balancing energy flow, such as stretching, massage, rocking, and fascia work. So, while shiatsu will incoporate the points and protocols that both acupuncture and acupressure use, a shiastu session will also include treatment of the whole body, beyond the symptomology.

The beauty of acupressure, though, is that many of the points can be self-applied when needed.
