I'd like to present one of my first party guests of honor, Lu Pierro. Lu was kind enough to share her gift with my readers.
Lu Pierro and her business partner, Pat Cicerone are the founders of Heartsbeat (Healing Energy Amplified Through Reiki’s Timeless Song). They are Usui/White Light Reiki Masters and both have active Reiki practices in Hunterdon County, NJ and Manahawkin, NJ. Lu and Pat teach Usui Reiki I and II as well as their Reiki and Drumming techniques. ( One must be a Reiki II practitioner to learn Reiki drumming.)
Workshops are given at their respective homes or at your Center. Visit their website:
www.heartsbeat.org or call 908-303-4858 for more information.
The drum used with Reiki for healing purposes is the frame drum. Its light weight and portability make it ideal to use around a client’s physical and etheric bodies.
Why Reiki and drumming? Rhythm is part of our inherent nature. Watch infants. They clap their hands, they stamp their feet, delighted to be able to produce sound that carries a beat. Give them a pot or a pan and they will transform them into a drum. It is because of our receptivity to rhythm that makes the marriage of Reiki and drumming so powerful for our healing and transformation.
For those who may not be familiar with Reiki, let me give a little background information. Reiki is an ancient form of energy medicine. Reiki was used by Tibetan Monks nearly 2500 years ago for their healing, and was rediscovered by Dr. Usui of Japan, hence the name, Usui Reiki. The term Reiki is comprised of two Japanese words, Rei which means Spirit and Ki which means life force. Through the use of symbols and the laying on of the practitioner's hands, Reiki energy flows through the practitioner to the client from Spirit, Universal Life Force, or God. It is Intelligent Energy, knowing where to go within the bodies of the client for healing.
The practitioner places her hands on or just above specific sports on the body. These spots correspond to the chakras or energy centers within the body. Reiki energy flows and frees up energy blockages, blockages that cause us stress and if left unchecked dis ease. Most of the time, a client will feel a sense of calm and or release during a Reiki session.
Drumming adds a unique feature to Reiki. Drumming asks you to be present to your healing. It is virtually impossible to drift off to sleep, or prepare your grocery list when drumming is added to your treatment. The Drum says, “ Be here, be here now.” Vibrational energy is a powerful healing tool. Shamanic wisdom of the past and present teaches this. Edgar Cayce said that sound therapy was the healing of the future.
During a Reiki session the drum’s beat is about 160 beats per minute, the beat of an embryo’s heart in utero. That tempo brings us back to the time and place when all the promise of life was ours.
As a Reiki practitioner, I always feel that my clients who fell asleep on the table missed something. While they claimed that they felt a sense of peace and well being, I wished they were more present to their own healing.
The drum allows clients the opportunity to be present. Because of the steady rhythm of the drum, it commands attention. The beat of the drum also quiets the monkey mind, it insists that you do the healing work that is offered to you.
Michael Drake, author of The Shamanic Drum: A Guide to Sacred Drumming
, states that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system and produces feelings of well- being.... Other studies have demonstrated the aiming, focusing and healing effects of drumming on Alzheimer’s patients, autistic children, emotionally disturbed teens, recovering addicts and trauma patients...”
My own experiences both as a Reiki drummer and teacher have been profound. One patient in particular embodies the healing power of Reiki Drumming. J came to me as a stage 4 cancer patient. We began Reiki and drumming on a weekly basis. Along with Reiki, J had standard chemo treatment. Her doctor had given her an expiration date which came and went. She is now alive, 8 months later. In those 8 months she has resumed working a 20 hour week, gone kayaking and bicycling and visited family and friends in Arizona and California. Her lungs have improved. Though she still has stage four cancer, she is living in every sense of the word.
Drumming and Reiki are yours whether you want to experience them as a client, or whether you want to learn them as skills to add to your holistic practice. Your ability to access Reiki in this form is but a beat away.

Thanks for the insight into Reiki and Drumming. . .I never thought to pair the two together. . .what a powerful practice:)
Thank you Gina so much for posting this thorough information about Reiki and Healing Drumming.
To share a little from my world, I've always felt and enjoyed the energy in my classroom as it was heightened by the sound of the drums that the babies, toddlers and preschoolers play when we make our music; but it is definitely due to more than the sounds' loudness; the vibrations in the room actually travel & touch everyone present, and thus, they make us simply "feel" more!
The babies & toddlers in particular enjoy the tingling sensation gained from beating on the drums with their little hands (tactile stimulation) and sure, they also enjoy the resulting sounds that they suddenly realize come from their own action (auditory stimulation). They can see, touch & hear the full experience of drumming and they THRIVE on this glowing multi-level, self-initiated stimulation.
They don't give second thought to trying to taste and smell the drums too, of course, until they grow out of their oral stage :-). They love to try to climb on the big gathering drums too, but that one we try to discourage obviously, so they don't fall down off of them or go through them! Letting babies make music by drumming with bare hands is absolutely a fabulous healthy move!
Well, thanks again for facilitating a cool place to learn & share!
Peace!
Patricia
