Their mission: "Nutritious Movement is a portal to an idea—that you are how you move and that you can move differently for a different, better outcome, once you have more information regarding how movement works." #MOVEMENTMATTERS
Why I support: Upon reading a third of an interview with biomechanist, Katy Bowman three years ago, I knew it was the missing piece I had been seeking regarding how to help my clients find practical solutions to their aches and pains. Katy is not just a scientist and movement teacher; she's a big thinker who recognized that we've been going about 'exercise' all the wrong way. That movement - or more specifically, our culture's lack thereof - needs to be placed back in the larger context of how humans throughout history have moved, and how our sedentary culture's lack of movement impacts not only our trillions of cells, but the whole planet.
Bonus: I am certified through her Restorative Exercise program as a personal trainer, but I will still refer my clients (and others - you don't have to be a client!) to check out her books, videos, blog and other materials. If you're not sure where to start (NM has a TON of resources!), just ask me. I'll point you in the right direction.
Their mission: "At Vivobarefoot we believe, above all else, in being natural in all walks of life.
That means combining ancient wisdom with modern technology through sustainable innovation. We don’t use jargon and we don’t like spin. We are honest and informed. Our shoes are built out of the stories we live, and the stories we tell about them flow from our values. We celebrate the potential of the human body to work beautifully. We respect the human experience. We try to inspire with humour and wit. We pledge to honour the foot."
Why I support: Well, come on! ;) I hope it's obvious by now that I'm all about allowing the body to do what it's designed to do with minimal interference. In my own transition to minimal shoes (and after blowing through a handmade pair of moccasins in less than a month) I took a chance on three pairs of Vivo's (including winter boots!). I love them all and will never look back. We don't often think about how our environments shape us, and nowhere is this better exemplified than with most styles of shoes. Mobility should be the priority, not the sacrifice.
Bonus: They walk their talk (haha...) and "are on a journey to become the most sustainable shoe company in the World." Read more about their vision here. Also, they have vegan shoe options!
Not sure you're ready for shoes without support? No problem! I'm also a certified "Healthy Foot Practitioner" and can help you make the transition to minimal shoes or just to help with greater mobility. Contact me about classes or private coaching sessions.
Their mission: "HEAL. EMPOWER. EMPLOY. Thistle Farms is a Nashville-based, globally minded social enterprise led by women survivors of trafficking, prostitution, and addiction. Every purchase of our handcrafted, natural body and home products directly benefits the women who make them. #LOVEHEALS"
Why I support: I have been seeking a way to bring awareness to the travesty of human trafficking while supporting the efforts of those who are rescuing and empowering the victims of this industry. Thistle Farms seemed like a good place to start. Even if you don't purchase their products, I hope you will explore the site, read their mission, and acquaint yourself with author, speaker, priest, and social entrepreneur, Becca Stevens.
Bonus: Becca emails out a free, daily spiritual reflection upon request entitled "Walking Barefoot". How cool is that?
Her mission: There's so many things I could write here, but I'll take one quote from her bio - "Really, I just want to keep offering “spiritual” backup. (I put spiritual in quotes because that’s a relative term if there ever was one.)"
Why I support. As I believe many of the physical pains we feel are a result of trying to fit into a world that doesn't honor our biological design, I believe, too, that our hearts and souls are suffering from misalignment. Danielle has an amazing way of articulating this spiritual mismatch, and encouraging us to come alive with her practical tools. (I LOVE practical tools!)
Her Desire Map process has helped me so often get out of my head and into my heart when facing a conflict or difficult decision. She has books, workbooks, planners, apps and even fun, uplifting stuff, like mala beads, candles and gold temporary tattoos! Like the other businesses featured here, Danielle is on a mission for her business to be a force of goodness, love, integrity and abundance ... offering income opportunities for others, as with this affiliate program, or her licensed facilitator programs.
