Are you in the right place?
You may be here seeking bodywork that will hammer out those knots in your shoulders and send you floating out the door. Or, a simple exercise routine to relieve some tension and improve your posture. Or, some tips, tricks, and 'hacks' to help you feel more balanced and grounded in your life.
Sure, you'll find a bit of that here. But, really, this is so. much. more.
I'm Gina Loree Marks, shiatsu practitioner and movement teacher (and part-time doodler...)
In eleven years of working with hundreds of clients - I've witnessed many people struggling to get their bodies healthy, leading to feelings of frustration, discouragement, and resignation. Whether this comes from living in a culture that approaches health and physical fitness like a battle of wills, or from the separation of 'self-care' from the rest of daily life, I believe the roots are the same:
We've drifted from living in the knowledge that we are part of the natural world. We've all but forgotten that true health can be attained when we are in a more harmonious relationship with nature (and our own nature).
"But, how do we do that?"
Our current health model too often co-opts our ability to listen to our bodies, fostering a loss of wholeness, and an inability to discern what our bodies really need.
The consequence becomes further disconnection, depletion of our vital core energy, and most commonly, injuries.
The more bewildered we become as to the source of our tension, pain, breakdown, the more willing we are to offer up our bodies to the experts with the plea, "Do whatever ya gotta do. Just fix me."
It's a vicious cycle.
On the surface, many of these approaches make sense. But, we generally aren't taught an appreciation for the necessity of softer, more subtle and nourishing practices; of slowing down and paying attention; of allowing rather forcing.
We don't trust that working with the body in this way is effective - whether for our fitness goals, or for addressing many of our most common aches, pains, and dysfunctions.
In many ways, we simply don't trust our own bodies.
It's not our fault. There are very few messages we receive through the world around us that encourages that trust. Most of us have no idea how to bring our bodies into the proper circumstances so that it can strengthen and heal itself, and then have patience for the healing process - or even understand the value of doing so.
If you're ready to become or stay active, reclaim your resilience, strength, flexibility, functionality, and self-awareness - if you're ready to end the war with your body - then I welcome you to embodygrace.
You are in the right place if...
~ You are ready to learn more about how your body moves, how it's not moving, and how you can help it to move better.
~ You are ready to engage more in self-exploration and self-development as an active participant, rather than just a passive recipient.
~ You are ready to focus less on the 'problems', and more on how to move more effectively toward living to your purpose, and would like some support to that end.
~ You understand (even a little) that there is a connection between the body and the mind and you are eager to experience what that means.
"That sounds like a lot of work...."
Don't worry, it's not about undertaking a complete life overhaul. (Unless you want to. :)
It is about starting with a more educated picture of the forces at work within your body. Then, exploring how your body as a whole has been navigating life. A little at a time.
If you have a clearer understanding of what you're doing, how you should be doing it or why you're doing it, you can make more effective and informed choices about how to best meet your own needs... whether through food, exercise, social interaction, how you spend your time, etc.
And, it's a million of those little choices that you make throughout your day that will add up to a much more harmonious relationship between you and everything.
"Great. But what about those knots in my shoulders?"
It's not lost on me that 'self-development' and 'relationship healing' is a hard sell to someone who just wants to be out of pain.
My intention is to help you better understand why your shoulders hurt (or why you hold all your stress there), so you can have a more pro-active role in the factors that lead to your shoulder pain, empowering you to become an expert in your own physical experience.
And I massage shoulders, too... because it really does feel so good! :)
"Okay, I'm listening. So, now what?"
